Bergstrom-Mahler Musuem
Look at the pictures and you'll see that we enjoyed our field trip to the musuem. We learned about Mrs. Bergstrom's love of paperweights. We learned how paperweights are made and we learned that glass can be beautiful! Please know that the museum is free to visit. Maybe this summer your family can visit the Bergstrom-Mahler Musem.
Our picnic at Riverside Park was fun, too. After our picnic lunch, everyone had fun playing on the big rocket playground.

Robin's nest by my front door.

I am enjoying listening to all of the bird sightings described by my students.  Thanks for your enthusiasm, parents, in helping your child enjoy nature. This picture shows that a robin won the fight. The nest was built right by our front door. I didn't want to have it so close to our entry way. So I would take the starting of the nest down and the robin would just start over again. This went on for a week. Over the weekend we were gone, so the robin had the place to herself and won the contest. Now we're watching to see the progress of the eggs and babies. Needless to say, we're not using the front door for awhile.

1000 Island Nature Center Field Trip

We returned to school after a full day at the nature center. It started with a hike. We saw about 10 deer, various birds, including ducks and geese. It was disappointing to hear that the eagle's nest blew down and the eagles are not seen as frequently. However, it was still lots of fun walking right beside the river.
We spent time exploring all of the exhibits and completing a scavenger hunt that helped us to see the wide variety of animals, arrowheads, nests and birds, all inside. After eating lunch we headed back outside to play Wing It and games of tag. Here are some pictures to show our day:

Thousand Island Nature Center
Field Trip
Kaukauna
Thursday, April 25
8:30 AM - 2:45 PM
Arrangements have been made for our third graders to experience an environmental education field trip to the Thousand Island Nature Center in Kaukauna. Students will visit learning stations, all related to the study of birds. They will also take a group hike to view the habitat of birds in this area, including the bald eagles' nest. This field trip is a very good educational extension to our informational writing project on birds and our science curriculum.
Each student should hand carry a healthy bag lunch and a beverage, as we will be eating at the center. We will travel by bus, leaving school at about 8:30 AM and returning at 2:45 PM. Please watch the weather for Thursday and dress appropriately for that day. Wear hiking shoes, too.
Students will be supervised by their classroom teachers and parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me. Our bus is full with the students, so volunteers will need to drive to the nature center. Volunteers do not need to pay the $5.00
The cost of the all day experience is $5.00 per student. This covers the entrance fee to the nature center and transportation. This money should be brought to school by Thursday, April 25.
I'm looking forward to sharing the experience at Thousand Island Nature Center with my students.
